OVERVIEW

InfiniteAxis is a variety streamer on Twitch with a focus on space and story-driven games. He also encourages his viewers to donate to ExtraLife, a community of gamers who raise money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. All this money goes towards care for sick and injured kids whose parents might not be able to afford the treatments needed.

He was looking to revitalize his stream with some new graphics for his channel and was still in the early stages of picking a direction for the rebranding, which was where I came in as a graphic designer.

CHALLENGES

The client was unsure on the direction he wanted to go with for the graphics, though ideally he'd like to try to use this rebrand as a way to showcase the style of games he plays. In his words, "I am a variety streamer, but I tend to gravitate towards Sci-Fi and Space games like No Man’s Sky, Elite: Dangerous, and the like, but I also have a rather large affinity with the Final Fantasy franchises."

In cases such as this when the client doesn't have a good idea of what they are looking for, I will usually ask for as much information from them as possible, such as what they do, who they are targeting, and if they have any stylistic preferences. From there, I will work out an initial draft and we will explore options based on their feedback.

LET'S EXPLORE

A couple of the more supportive members of his community suggested some possible themes, most of which revolved around synthwave, space and Norse mythology. We decided to explore these further, starting with the logo.

The initial concept I came up is inspired by Jormungand, a mythical sea serpent that is associated with the Ouroboros in Norse mythology. From my research the Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, and has often been depicted as the infinity symbol throughout the history — making it a perfect representation of the channel name. I took the concept a step further by incorporating synthwave, specifically a sunset and neon grids, into the design.

While the client liked the concept, he also had an idea he wanted to discuss with me. As he plays a lot of Elite: Dangerous and uses the Krait Phantom or Krait Mk2 as his ship of choice, he was wondering if it would be possible to combine that with a wolf and raven, which plays a large role in his beliefs. We gave it a try, but ultimately decided to go with what I suggested since the client is likely to branch out to other games in the future.

THE FINAL

With the logo settled, we applied the same aesthetic to the screens and panels; it was the same with the sub badges, except that I used different colors and gradients to represent the different tiers of Twitch subscriptions.

Finally, the client added a Raven Kappamon (basically a virtual raven pet) to the channel during that time, which quickly became a community favorite. As such, he wanted to features a cute and cartoony raven in various poses for the emotes.
