PROJECT OVERVIEW
Buddha Bread, a family-owned business, offers oven-ready gluten-free bread in various flavors. Their products was available in multiple retailers, including Whole Foods and online.

The clients reached out to me to design bag packaging for their products. Although they had a basic idea, and a previous version, they sought an updated rendition of all the artwork.

CHALLENGES
When the client's requests are more broad, I typically present them with several concepts, await their response, and build from there. The challenge lay in conceptualizing designs that made logical design choices while considering the client's feedback.

I aimed to maintain a similar tone to the previous bag design, specifically the little Buddha caricature, but wanted to inject it with a fresh art style and vibrancy. I liked the idea of the caricature, but felt that the rendition of it they had previously didn't look as eye-catching as it could.

THE PROCESS
The client proposed several ideas, most of which leaned towards a more subdued, approachable art style. We opted to explore these further, starting with rough sketches. The initial concept I devised drew inspiration from minimalist and pop art styles.

It featured simpler shapes, colors, and thicker lines flowing into the second half of the bag, where all product information would be displayed — creating a fitting representation of the product's name.

The second half of the bag would serve as flowing robe-esque design. This "robe", as well as the product name, would change color depending on the flavor. Once the artwork was finally designed, the product image would be placed front and centered, as if the cartoon was presenting it to the customer.

ENDGAME
Once the bag design was finalized, we extended the same aesthetic to their other product, "bread stix." I used varied colors and images to distinguish between the different product lines.

Ultimately, the client noted a notable uptick in interest in the product. They attributed much of this newfound success to the approachable and whimsical cartoon-style artwork.
